Mummified Apples!

Hawks class have mummified an apple – we have been researching instruction writing in Literacy and created a set of instructions for this experiment. The ancient Egyptians would clean the body before removing the organs and drying out the body. They used natron (a natural type of salt) to do this. We experimented with using salt and bicarbonate soda to dry out our apples before wrapping them up in tissue paper.

Fireworks Fun in Pre-School!

This week the children have enjoyed getting ready for Fireworks night, we have been getting very messy using lots of glitter and paint to make fireworks. The children have also been exploring different textures as they have made marks in flour and salt using lollipop sticks; the marks they made were different fireworks. Throughout our circle times we have been discussing with the children about the safety around fireworks and how we can keep safe when watching them.

Literacy in Owls Class

Owls are loving our new Literacy unit, based on the book ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. We have focussed on instruction writing this week and the children thoroughly enjoyed our lesson on sequencing and following the instructions on how to make a jam sandwich. They have since written their own instructions and created their own balanced lunch box menus, full of delicious treats.

Remember, remember the 5th of November…

Robins class have settled back into school really well.  They have been learning about Guy Fawkes (a historical figure of the past) and the Gunpowder Plot and creating their own rockets and firework pictures. They used their fine motor skills to draw patterns to create their beautiful pictures.

Hawks – Autumn Term at Forest School

Hawks have actively been doing the tasks in their Wild Passports, they are developing their skills very well, tools and firelighting particularly.  We have done tie-dying, made conker soap, made necklaces and conker people and lots of their own clay designs. We have done a lot of cooking over the fire too: popcorn, bread and s’mores!

Eagles – Autumn Term at Forest School

We have done tie-dying with blackberries and turmeric which produced some beautiful effects. We cooked popcorn over the fire, cooked bread on a stick and had s’mores of course! We whittled gnomes and pencils, using a knife to make a point on the end of a stick. We have made some super things out of clay and even invented our own TV show with a piece of cardboard. They will go home with their wild passports this week all having passed their advanced beginners certificates.

Fantastic Harvest Festival

It was amazing to be back in All Saints Church for our annual Harvest Festival this afternoon.  The children’s performance of the Enormous Turnip was truly outstanding and it was wonderful to share this with parents.  Thank you to everyone who made the Festival such a memorable occasion and a big thank you to everyone for their donations to our Harvest Collection.
