Poppy Day

The pre-school children have been busy this week learning about poppies and the importance of why we wear them. They have been making their own poppies using tissue paper and glue, painting poppies and exploring a poppy themed messy tray. We also spoke about the colours of the green and purple poppy and what they represent.

Hawks at Forest School

Hawks class have been learning about wasps, ladybirds, pigeons and edible hedgerow plants this term. They’ve observed all these creatures and plants on our site so have had first hand connection with them. They have whittled, made fires, built dens, cooked welsh cakes over the fire and played in the mud kitchen and on the swings and hammock.

Autumn Term at Forest School for Eagles Class

For our Eagles class these are their last Forest School sessions of their school life at Houghton Conquest! They have been amazing at learning to use all the tools, make fires, find an incredible amount of bugs and build their own dens. They also helped with brush cutting of all the weeds in the hedge. Well done to them for getting through a huge amount of tasks in their Wild Passports too!!

Learning about Cultures

The children have enjoyed looking at different cultures around the world, they did this by looking into different dances that people do and trying different fruits. We introduced the story Handa’s Surprise to the children which explored a different way of life to how the children know here in Houghton Conquest, from this story the children made animal masks and cut out their own fruit for their fruit baskets.

Indian Dance Workshop

The children participated in an Indian Dance workshop on Friday which was led by K’z Dance Entertainment. The children were taught a brief introduction of Indian dances, culture and festivals as well as a brief festival storytelling about Diwali.

The children worked on 2 dance routines which were showcased at the end of each session and the day finished with a grand finale dance performance. Everyone involved had a fab time, including the staff!

Space Week

The pre-school children have had a great week looking at all things space, they wrapped the home corner in tin foil to give a space effect, the children had their very own space rocket pretending to be astronauts. The children also made their own space rockets and wrote their name letters in shapes to build a rocket.

All Things Autumn in Pre-School

The children have enjoyed Autumn crafts as they have been making their own Autumn tree, pumpkins using leaves and exploring texture trays with Autumnal resources. The children gathered these resources by going on a sensory walk to the field at school and gathered everything they could find.

Doves Autumn Term Learning

In Doves class they have been focusing on the book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. The children have learnt the story with actions, written their own versions and even gone on their very own bear hunt! As part of the topic ‘Into the Woods’ they’ve been learning all about plants in science. The children went on a tree hunt, identifying different trees around school using their leaves.

Robins

This week Robins have been learning about teeth and how to keep them healthy along with their five senses.  They went on a sensory walk around school whereby they used their senses of touch, smell, hear and sight. They could see and hear lots of singing, talking, the wind blowing the leaves, aeroplanes and rustling of crunchy leaves; they could smell school dinners, a bonfire from Forest School and could touch the leaves, grass and hug a tree.
